The breed

The Rottweiler

Behind its impressive presence is an exceptionally complete dog: noble, loyal, intelligent, stable and with an enormous capacity for work.

Purebred Rottweiler with pedigree

01 · History

From Rottweil to the world

The Rottweiler takes its name from Rottweil, an old town in south-west Germany. For centuries it worked alongside cattlemen and traders there: it drove the herds, guarded the road and pulled small carts. That working life shaped a hardy, intelligent dog, deeply bonded to its people.

02 · Character

Confident. Calm. Loyal.

A good Rottweiler is self-assured, balanced and attentive. Brave and protective when the situation calls for it, calm and affectionate with its family. Its intelligence and its bond with the handler make it a companion for life.

Power in proportion

A powerful, compact body, strong bone and defined muscle. A characteristic head with a noble, confident expression. Proportions that speak of a dog built to move: broad, a natural trotter and firm.

Selective, family breeding

We breed Rottweilers seeking balance between character, function and conformation.

Batanen is a family project dedicated to preserving and improving the best qualities of the Rottweiler. We know and study the main European bloodlines, with a special interest in German dogs and lines.

We do not aim to breed many dogs. Every mating follows a careful selection of top-quality breeding dogs of international standing, and every litter has a specific goal within the breeding programme.

Our philosophy

A Rottweiler's beauty cannot be separated from its function.

Historically, the Rottweiler is a working dog. Breeding a good dog is not about producing one that looks spectacular: selection looks for health, character, conformation, function and working ability all at once.

  1. 01

    Health

Control of the hereditary diseases associated with the breed and selection of healthy breeding dogs.

  2. 02

    Character

A stable, confident and balanced temperament. A dog that can live with a family and can work.

  3. 03

    Conformation

Structure, head, expression, pigmentation, bone and movement true to the standard.

  4. 04

    Work

Aptitude, focus and willingness to learn: the functional essence of the Rottweiler.

What we study before every mating

Every litter must have a specific goal. That is why we analyse both breeding dogs and their lines in depth before making a decision.

Goal of the mating

To fix the type of Puma vom Wilden Westen through line breeding (3-2 on Puma) and obtain uniform ADRK-type puppies. The aim is to strengthen head, bone and pigment without losing working ability.

Why these breeding dogs

Hektor brings proven show type (V1 in working class, BOS at the CACIB Ortenau 2024) and a clean health panel (HD/ED free, DM N/N, JLPP clear), so no puppy can be born affected by DM or JLPP. Irina, a direct daughter of Puma, brings a very typical head, good bone, pigment and angulation, as well as a stable character.

Health and selection

Health starts before the mating

Controlling the hereditary diseases associated with the breed is the breeder's responsibility. These are the most common ones, and we take them very seriously at Batanen.

HipsHip dysplasia (HD)Hip dysplasia is a common hereditary disease in the Rottweiler. The hip joint fits poorly, causing pain, lameness and arthritis over the years. Besides genetics, excess weight and intense exercise during growth play a role. That is why both parents should have certified hips (HD-A or B) and the puppy should grow up lean, with moderate exercise.
ElbowsElbow dysplasia (ED)Elbow dysplasia is also hereditary and common in the Rottweiler. It covers several developmental disorders of the elbow joint that cause front-leg lameness, often between 4 and 10 months of age, and arthritis over time. As with the hips, rapid growth, excess weight and high-impact exercise worsen the outlook. Both parents should have elbows certified free (ED 0) and the puppy should grow up lean, with moderate exercise.
JLPPJuvenile laryngeal paralysis and polyneuropathyJLPP (juvenile laryngeal paralysis and polyneuropathy) is a serious genetic disease of the Rottweiler. It is inherited recessively, so a puppy is only affected if it inherits the faulty gene from both parents. It usually appears in the first months of life with noisy breathing, changes in the bark, choking, weakness and poor leg coordination. It is often complicated by aspiration pneumonia. There is no cure and the prognosis is very poor. The good news is that a DNA test exists: if at least one parent is clear (N/N), no puppy in the litter can be affected.
ADNGenetic profile and parentage verificationDNA tests show whether a dog carries genes for certain hereditary diseases before any symptoms appear. In the Rottweiler the most common are JLPP, leukoencephalomyelopathy (LEMP) and degenerative myelopathy (DM), and they are also used to confirm parentage. They are done with a simple cheek swab or a blood sample. The result is given as clear (N/N), carrier (N/affected) or affected. A carrier does not fall ill but can pass on the gene. That is why you should ask the breeder for the DNA certificates of both parents. If both are clear, the puppies will be too.
